Moving the bar on multidisciplinary solutions to wicked urban stream problems
The 5th international Symposium on Urbanization and Stream Ecology (SUSE5) will be held February 12 to 15, 2020 in downtown Austin, Texas (USA) at the Palmer Events Center on beautiful Ladybird Lake. The intimate meeting of ~120 leading scientists, practitioners, and students will continue in the SUSE tradition of sharing and promoting collaborative, interdisciplinary approaches to managing and restoring streams in urbanizing landscapes.
“Wicked problems” faced by urban streams require expertise in a variety of disciplines (e.g. natural and social sciences, engineering, landscape architecture, etc.) and SUSE5 seeks to bring together diverse teams to collaborate on real case studies spanning a gradient of Austin stream settings. Case study results will ultimately be shared with City of Austin staff to potentially advance to conceptual planning and other “pre-implementation” evaluation phases.
Posters: The deadline for abstract submissions has passed, and presenters have been notified of their acceptance. Presenters are encouraged to use the #betterposter format in preparing their posters. Posters of this design should be sized to 48" (width) X 36" (height). You are free to design the poster as you wish, but if you want to use the PowerPoint template available from the example above, first download the landscape template and then resize the slides by clicking 'Design' and then 'Slide Size' and selecting 'Custom slide size'. When prompted, change the width to 48" (height is already OK) and click 'OK'. Then on the next dialog box select 'Ensure Fit', which leads to a slide for the poster with “blank” areas at the top/bottom. Manually extend the size boxes to the top and bottom of the page and move the text boxes as needed up/down. Posters will be displayed on tripod stands with a solid backer (provided at the meeting). Please email us (email@example.com) if you have any questions about your poster or the #betterposter design.
Accessibility and Inclusion: SUSE5 aims to be a positive, collaborative, interdisciplinary experience for researchers, practitioners, and other stakeholders committed to improving urban stream function. The SUSE Code of Conduct will be in place to help ensure a positive and safe environment for all participants. The Central Library and Palmer Events Center are ADA accessible facilities, and ADA accessible transportation for the case study field visits can be provided. Within the available budget and conference resources, several meals with be available to facilitate working lunches during the conference (please use the supplemental registration form to make us aware of dietary restrictions). Please reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org or any of the SUSE5 committee members with needs or concerns so that we can facilitate your full participation in SUSE5.
