The talk will include some background about the case studies and SUSE5 meeting, restoration decisions and outcomes of case studies, and a discussion of how input during SUSE5 influenced outcomes. The talk will be followed by questions from the audience and a broader discussion about urban stream restoration.&nbsp;</span></span><br /><span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">This is the first webinar hosted by the </span><a href="https://www.urbanstreamecology.org/"><span style="color:rgb(17, 85, 204)">Symposium on Urban Stream Ecology</span></a><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">. The goal of the webinar series is to reach a broader audience than those able to participate in the symposium (which only occurs every 3 years) and to support conversations on topics important to the field of urban stream ecology. For FY2020, the project is ranked outside of the Top 20 and there is not a set time to launch a feasibility study for this CIP yet.&nbsp; Based on the input received at SUSE5, the LFRR section will engage the community t [...] ]]></description><content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class="paragraph">The Local flood Risk Reduction (LFRR) section completed the in-house project feasibility about 2 years ago and concluded there was no feasible in-house solution), and that it should be considered for a larger-scope, Capital Improvement Project (CIP) based on the LFRR priorities. For FY2020, the project is ranked outside of the Top 20 and there is not a set time to launch a feasibility study for this CIP yet.&nbsp; Based on the input received at SUSE5, the LFRR section will engage the community to learn more about the extent of the problem and how individuals are coping with flooding issues (because there is evidence of people trying to implement their own solutions). Some of the potential technical solutions that will be considered for this project include:<br /><ol><li>looking at the possibility of implementing rain harvesting as much as possible in the area and installing rain gardens</li><li>Targeted buyouts in which residents are relocated within the same neighborhood (there are some vacant lots)</li><li>Building a large wetland in large vacant lots in order to provide detention</li><li>Some of the homes have large lots that are vacant, consider installing limited storage in as many homes as possible</li><li>Instead of having a pipe all the way down to the creek, consider daylighting the last section as much as possible.</li></ol></div>]]></content:encoded></item><item><title><![CDATA[Plans for Boggy@Cherrywood]]></title><link><![CDATA[https://www.urbanstreamecology.org/case-study-updates/plans-for-boggycherrywood]]></link><comments><![CDATA[https://www.urbanstreamecology.org/case-study-updates/plans-for-boggycherrywood#comments]]></comments><pubDate>Mon, 13 Apr 2020 18:38:49 GMT</pubDate><category><![CDATA[Site 1 - Boggy@Cherrywood]]></category><guid isPermaLink="false">https://www.urbanstreamecology.org/case-study-updates/plans-for-boggycherrywood</guid><description><![CDATA[After the SUSE5 meeting, folks from the City of Austin had an internal meeting (Local Flood and Creek Flood missions) where they discussed moving forward as a joint local+creek flood project as early as 2021, possible with Design Phase. Environmental (Stream Restoration + Quality) is also a part of this discussion. This is consistent the recommendation from SUSE 5 to make it a comprehensive project involving multiple missions.&nbsp;&#8203;Folks from the City of Austin Watershed Protection Dept.
