SUSE 7

13-16 May 2025

San Juan, Puerto Rico

The 7th Symposium on Urbanization and Stream Ecology (SUSE7) was another fantastic meeting, this time hosted by the newly-formed Urban Chapter of the Society for Freshwater Science. The theme of SUSE7, “Grassroots to Greenways: Local Voices and Strengths Shaping the Future of Urban Waters” reflected the strong place-based nature of SUSE7 and the commitment of the SFS Urban Chapter to include all urban aquatic and semi-aquatic ecosystems.
Like past symposia, SUSE7 featured hands-on and interactive workshops that gave attendees the opportunity to learn about, and participate in, the management, community, and research challenges, and achievements, of the many types urban aquatic ecosystems of San Juan.
Like past SUSE, we also had a whole lot of fun! See some of the moments we captured in the photo gallery.
Check out the SUSE7 program!

About SUSE:

The Symposium on Urbanization and Stream Ecology (SUSE) is an interdisciplinary meeting held approximately every 3-5 years with the specific aim to further the scientific study of stream ecosystems in urban landscapes. The symposium shares knowledge between researchers and practitioners from around the world and has sparked influential discussions and publications on problem definition, global similarities and differences, and interdisciplinary in practice, among other topics.

SUSE attracts an average of 150 participants from varied cultural, professional, and disciplinary backgrounds. A guiding principle of SUSE is that including scientists and practitioners with different lived experiences and working in different ecosystems yields innovation, creativity, and representation essential for transformative scientific advancements and integrated urban landscape management solutions. Anyone who is even peripherally interested in urban aquatic ecosystems is welcome and encouraged to attend!
